Softball 4-0 over weekend tournament to continue win streak

The Shockers played Bradley, a former Missouri Valley Conference opponent,  and Western Illinois in the Black and Yellow Challenge this weekend. They went 4-0 over Saturday and Sunday. 

Game 1: 

The Shockers played Bradley, a former Missouri Valley Conference opponent,  and Western Illinois. In game one, Wichita State beat Western Illinois 8-0 in six innings. 

Freshman pitcher Alex Aguliar pitched a complete game shutout. She only allowed two hits, zero walks and struck out two in 6.0 innings. 

Junior Lainee Brown and senior Lauren Mills both homered twice. 

The Shockers scored five runs by the second inning. Mills walked it off with her second home run of the game in the sixth. 

Game 2:

Against Bradley, junior Lauren Howell allowed only one unearned run on one hit and recorded two strikeouts. Bradley’s run was scored on a two-base throwing error. 

Bradley led 3-0 until the fourth when junior Zoe Jones hit a solo shot. The Shockers scored three runs off of throwing errors in the fifth. Freshman Sami Hood hit a two run-single, which led to a final score of 4-1. 

Wichita State played Bradley the following day in game three. They ended the game with a 9-2 win. 

Game 3:

Sophomore lefty Alison Cooper got the start in the circle. She allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk. 

Bradley started off with a 1-0 lead similar to Saturday afternoon. The Shockers broke the game wide open by scoring four runs in the third. Sophomore Camryn Compton hit a solo shot, her first of the year. Senior Sydney McKinney hit a RBI groundout and then Jones hit a two run-homer.  

Mills ended the scoring in the sixth with a three-run homer. 

Game 4: 

Sophomore Kenzie Schopfer got the start in the circle  against Western Illinois on Sunday.  She allowed one run on two hits. Howell came in for 4.0 innings of relief and struck out four batters, giving her the win. 

The Leathernecks scored their only run of the game off of a solo shot in the second. The Shockers scored their first run off of an RBI single from junior Jessica Garcia. 

McKinney hit a leadoff bunt single and stole second which set up junior Lauren Lucas for a walk-off RBI. 

The Shockers are now on an 11 game winning streak and have a 16-3 record overall.. They’ll play a single game against Stanford at home on March 9 at 3 p.m. in Wilkins Stadium.
